Iowa Disposal Assistance Program --TESTING--
The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship is launching a disposal assistance program to help Iowa pork producers who are unable to harvest pigs because of COVID-19 supply chain disruptions.
The Resource Coordination Center is available to help producers explore every option to harvest livestock, including identifying other markets or making a donation to the Pass the Pork program.
As a last resort, producers may be forced to humanely euthanize animals to prevent welfare issues. Producers can apply to receive state-funding to properly dispose of carcasses in an environmentally-sound manner.
The Department is offering producers $40 per animal to help cover some of the disposal costs for qualifying hogs (weighing at least 225 pounds). The disposal assistance funding will be made available to Iowa producers in at least three rounds.
Every approved applicant will receive funding for at least 1,000 animals per round. Additional funds will be obligated to applicants in 1,000-animal increments until applicants reach the 30,000 animals per round limit or the first round of funding is fully obligated.
