Testing Process

Step 1: Prepare 

All Testing
  • All testing is by appointment only. Testers should call sites prior to travel.
  • Due to COVID-19, test sites may have implemented testing procedures recommended by public health agencies (social distancing, use of masks, etc.).
  • Days of the week and hours of operation vary at each test location. Summer and school breaks may have limited hours.
  • Bring your photo I.D. Under the Iowa Administrative Rules you may be denied the right to test for one year for cheating or for representing yourself as another person.
  • Each pesticide test category may be taken once per day regardless of location. All test categories are available at all sites.
  • Testing fees are charged by the testing location and are unrelated to pesticide applicator certification fees.
  • Study manuals may be purchased at the ISU Extension Store:

Step 2: Certification

  • Apply for certification on the Self-Service Portal for License and Registration.
  • A pesticide applicator certification is not valid until an Iowa certification card is issued by IDALS.
  • If you do not have internet access, mail your application and payment to: IDALS Pesticide Bureau, Hoover State Office Building, 1305 E. Walnut Street, Des Moines, IA 50319.
