After several decades in the Wallace Building, the Department of Ag and Land Stewardship will be moving to a new location in 2025 – the 5th floor of the Hoover Building, which is located southeast of the Capitol and northeast of the Supreme Court building.
It’s Happening
Although a move has been discussed as a possibility in the past, we have been informed and assured that it WILL happen in 2025. Following years of discussions and cost estimates, it has been determined that it is not a wise use of time or taxpayer resources to complete the more than $50+ million in repairs that are needed to the Wallace Building.
This move is happening, and it’s important that we work together to make it as smooth as possible.
The Department of Administrative Services (DAS), which will be managing our move, is anticipating a Spring 2025 move. We are working closely with DAS to build out a comprehensive move plan, including numerous steps/tasks and timelines. We have also been in close collaboration with the DNR, who recently went through a similar move, and shared insights, tips and more, which we are incorporating into our plans.
Pack and Prep Week Expectations
During Pack and Prep Week, your bureau chief will designate a specific time(s) for your team to work on preparing for the move (which many of you have already gotten a jump-start on!).
During this week, all staff should:
- Begin taking personal items home from your workspace.
- Clean out your personal cubicle or office, including drawers, cabinets, and shelves.
- Pack any work-related materials or items that won’t be needed prior to the move.
- Help organize, and pack shared/common areas, including group filing systems and storage areas.
Shred Bins:
- Shred bins will be available throughout the week for disposing of any confidential or sensitive documents. As a reminder, shred bins should only be used for documents that have confidential or sensitive information. All other paper can go in regular recycling.
- If you’re unsure whether something should be shredded or retained, please check with your supervisor.
Unneeded Furniture/Equipment:
- You likely have seen pieces of different colored tape on various items throughout the building. What does each color mean?
- Yellow: Item can be disposed of by the end of April
- Blue: Item can be disposed of but is needed until we move
- Green: Item is moving with us to Hoover
- As you are cleaning up workspaces and communal areas and come across items (furniture, file cabinets, equipment, etc.) that can be disposed of now, work with your designated floor captains from the Move Team to get items moved to the staging room so they can be placed on GovDeals.
- If you have IT equipment that is no longer needed by your bureau/program, contact Justin Stott to determine whether it should be disposed of or utilized by a different bureau/program.
Working Together
As we move forward, our goal is to communicate as much and as transparently as possible. We encourage you to ask questions so you can be as informed as possible. Please feel free to email anyone on the Steering Committee with questions and comments. You can also submit questions and comments anonymously through this Google Form.
In return, we ask for your cooperation, partnership and patience, as we navigate the process of planning and executing a large-scale move.
Thank you for your assistance with this project. We are confident that with hard work, teamwork and effective communication we will complete the move and be enjoying our new space in the Hoover Building by this time next year.
Centralizing Office Supplies
Additionally, as part of the move and everyone being in one space together, we will be centralizing all general office supplies into one communal supply area. To support this transition:
- All unopened general office supplies (list attached with specific examples) should be brought to the collection area behind the main reception desk and placed in the boxes which will be labeled accordingly.
- Do not bring opened/loose office supplies to the collection area. These items should be packed with your personal workspace or taken home.
- Please do not throw away unused supplies—we want to avoid unnecessary waste and duplication in the new space.
- Bureaus may continue to order specialized office supplies specific to their programs using the standard purchase requisition process. At Hoover, these bureau-specific supplies must be stored within each bureau’s designated work area.
The New Space in Hoover
The new office space will have exciting benefits, including:
- Our entire central office in one main area rather than spread out on different floors/areas.
- More windows and natural light, with a great view of the Capitol.
- New and updated furniture, including cubicles.
- Additional conference rooms, all equipped with virtual technology.
- Upgraded break rooms and amenities.
