Vaccination can be a valuable management tool, especially when combined with management practices to avoid transmission to herd replacements, testing and prevention of Johne’s introduction through outside sources.
Vaccination can reduce and help prevent:
- Clinical signs and gross lesions
- Fecal shedding (reduce the number of organisms shed and length of time shedding occurs)
- Infection rates
Vaccination is Available through the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship
To obtain approval, in cooperation with your herd veterinarian, the following steps must be completed:
1. A Vaccination Agreement must be completed and signed by the Herd Owner, Herd Veterinarian, District Veterinarian and State Veterinarian.
2. Vaccine is only for use in known infected herds (positive organism-based test).
3. A whole herd tuberculosis (TB) test is required before vaccination approval and any herd additions must undergo TB testing.
4. Vaccine may only be used in calves 1 - 35 days of age and administered by an accredited veterinarian.
5. Vaccinated calves are tattooed and identified (record of vaccination is submitted to Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship).
