Abandoned mine land reclamation projects are designed to alleviate health, safety, and environmental problems created by coal mines abandoned prior to August 3, 1977.  The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Mines and Minerals Bureau has initiated plans to reclaim the following Abandoned Mine Land (AML) sites:

  1. Woodruff AML – – Approximately 124 acres located in Marion County
  2. Van EE AML – – Approximately 80 acres located in Marion County
  3. Barnett AML – – Approximately 16 acres located in Marion County
  4. McNeil AML – – Approximately 7 acres located in Davis County
  5. Johnson AML – – Approximately 10 acres located in Marion County
  6. Klootwyk AML – – Approximately 109 acres located in Marion County
  7. Vanderzyl AML – – Approximately 66 acres located in Marion County
  8. Vanderzyl East AML – – Approximately 21 acres located in Marion County
  9. Kuiper AML – – Approximately 84 acres located in Marion County
  10. Vander Veer AML – – Approximately 21 acres located in Marion County
  11. Bos AML – – Approximately 35 acres located in Wapello County
  12. Eden AML – – Approximately 12 acres located in Van Buren County
  13. Pedrick AML – – Approximately 10 acres located in Van Buren County
  14. Memmelaar West AML – – Approximately 23 acres located in Mahaska County
  15. Pella North and South AML – – Approximately 164 acres located in Marion County
  16. B-Caves - - Approximately 8 acres located in Van Buren County
  17. R-Caves - - Approximately 2 acres located in Van Buren County
  18. Feagins - - Approximately 5 acres located Marion County
  19. Noah - - Approximately 192 acres located in Marion County
  20. Wilcox - - Approximately 100 acres located in Marion County
  21. North King - - Approximately 55 acres located in Mahaska County
  22. Paul Todd - - Approximately 48 acres located in Marion County
  23. Taylor - - Approximately 5 acres located in Wapello County
  24. D. Harrington - - Approximately 53 acres located in Marion County
  25. Banstra - - Approximately 48 acres located in Monroe County 
  26. Bohrman - - Approximately 12 acres located in Monroe County
  27. Buettner - - Approximately 12 acres located in Marion County
  28. Carbon West - - Approximately 12 acres located in Davis County
  29. Harper - - Approximately 90 acres located in Mahaska County
  30. Kool - - Approximately 17 acres located in Monroe County 
  31. Morris - - 68 acres located in Marion County
  32. Striegel - - 28 acres located in Keokuk County

The above projects will be submitted to the Federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement for funding consideration.

AML priority features to be mitigated through reclamation include (but are not limited to) dangerous highwalls, dangerous piles and embankments, hazardous water bodies, clogged streams, clogged stream land, and industrial/residential waste removal.
