Abandoned mine land reclamation projects are designed to alleviate health, safety, and environmental problems created by coal mines abandoned prior to August 3, 1977.  The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Mines and Minerals Bureau has initiated plans to reclaim the following Abandoned Mine Land (AML) sites:

  1. Klootwyk AML – – Approximately 109 acres located in Marion County
  2. Vanderzyl AML – – Approximately 66 acres located in Marion County
  3. Vanderzyl East AML – – Approximately 21 acres located in Marion County
  4. Kuiper AML – – Approximately 84 acres located in Marion County
  5. Vander Veer AML – – Approximately 21 acres located in Marion County
  6. Bos AML – – Approximately 35 acres located in Wapello County
  7. Memmelaar West AML – – Approximately 23 acres located in Mahaska County
  8. Pella North and South AML – – Approximately 164 acres located in Marion County
  9. B-Caves - - Approximately 8 acres located in Van Buren County
  10. R-Caves - - Approximately 2 acres located in Van Buren County
  11. Feagins - - Approximately 5 acres located Marion County
  12. Noah - - Approximately 192 acres located in Marion County
  13. Wilcox - - Approximately 100 acres located in Marion County
  14. North King - - Approximately 55 acres located in Mahaska County
  15. Paul Todd - - Approximately 48 acres located in Marion County
  16. Taylor - - Approximately 5 acres located in Wapello County
  17. D. Harrington - - Approximately 53 acres located in Marion County
  18. Buettner - - Approximately 12 acres located in Marion County
  19. Carbon West - - Approximately 12 acres located in Davis County
  20. Harper - - Approximately 90 acres located in Mahaska County
  21. Kool - - Approximately 17 acres located in Monroe County
  22. Morris - - 68 acres located in Marion County
  23. Hynick –Approximately 10 acres located in Mahaska County
  24. Bruxvoort –Approximately 17 acres located in Mahaska County
  25. Davis –Approximately 38 acres located in Wapello County
  26. Lyon –  Approximately 6 acres located in Wapello County
  27. Speck - Approximately 11 acres located in Marion County
  28. Hayes – Approximately 18 acres located in Marion County
  29. Belzer –Approximately 11 acres located in Monroe County
  30. Gilkerson – Approximately 28 acres located in Marion County
  31. Rempe 2 –Approximately 13 acres located in Van Buren County
  32. Beasley – Approximately 18 acres located in Van Buren County
  33. Eilander – Approximately 37 acres located in Marion County
  34. Marvin Westercamp 1- Approximately 4 acres located in Van Buren County
  35. Marvin Westercamp 2- Approximately 7 acres located in Van Buren County
  36. Roe –Approximately 28 acres located in Mahaska County

The above projects will be submitted to the Federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement for funding consideration.

AML priority features to be mitigated through reclamation include (but are not limited to) dangerous highwalls, dangerous piles and embankments, hazardous water bodies, clogged streams, clogged stream land, and industrial/residential waste removal.
